Theory of Writing

When I think about my theory of writing, it’s hard to describe it in a way that has not been said already. In my previous post, I uploaded my first assignment and midterm assignment, both of which express my views of writing. So now I’m faced with the task of coming with my final mindset of writing, my theory of it.

Freedom.

This word can be used in a wide array of instances, and writing is no different. When someone is writing, there’s no one there to interrupt you, prove you wrong, or dispute your ideas. It’s just you, your brain, and endless possibilities. It’s a way to really be yourself, not worry about what others think about you. So many times with human interaction and conversation, we are trying to mold ourselves into being who it is we think others are expecting. But when we are on our own, writing, we get to be who we really are. Personally, I love to write. If you give me a topic that I truly care about, I can go on for days. I have too many opinions that I believe are correct to get all out in a face to face conversation.

Expression.

Another great word that immensely represents writing. What is writing if not a form of expression? Whether you are trying to express your feelings, your thoughts, your ideas, or just the fact that you need to pass a class, the expression of writing is endless. Personally writing is, obviously, the best form of expression. There is no guidelines, no rules, no due dates, and nothing is forced upon you. You get to write, because you want to write. However, there is also a sense of expression in papers that you are forced to write. I’ve found that even though I may not want to write papers that are assigned in class, it’s just another way for the professor to get to know me. I may not get an A, but I know no matter one, my professor is one step closer to truly knowing me as a person and not just a student.

Opinion.

Oh the best part of writing, especially personal writing. It is all a matter of opinion. No one can tell you that you’re right or wrong. You need a comma here, a semi-colon there. You have run have on sentences, italicize words, capital letters, whatever is need to get your opinion out there. Everyone has an opinion on everything thing in life where it is something you have dwelled upon or not. The beauty of it writing is that no one can tell you that it’s good or bad. They may disagree and throw a fit. But at the end of the day, it’s all just a matter of opinion.
